If Bitcoin falls back below Strategy’s average cost basis (approximately $66,000–$76,000 across various tranches), the financial engineering underpinning the strategy comes under scrutiny.

Metaplanet Raises $255 Million to Accelerate Bitcoin Accumulation

What happened: Tokyo-listed Metaplanet completed a major capital raise of approximately $255 million through a third-party share sale aimed at global institutional investors. Fixed-strike warrants included in the deal could bring total potential proceeds to around $531 million. The company, which currently holds approximately 35,102 BTC, is targeting 100,000 BTC by year-end and 210,000 BTC as a longer-term multi-year goal. It also launched Metaplanet Ventures, a wholly owned subsidiary allocating approximately 4 billion yen ($27 million) over two to three years to Bitcoin infrastructure investment in Japan, with an initial investment of 400 million yen (~$2.7 million) in JPYC Inc., issuer of Japan’s first licensed yen-denominated stablecoin.

Bull case: Japan’s deep capital markets and relatively low interest rates make it a compelling jurisdiction for levered Bitcoin accumulation strategies. Metaplanet is building infrastructure, not just buying coins, which positions it as a platform for future Bitcoin financial services revenue.

Bear case: Metaplanet’s stock has declined roughly 25% year-to-date and over 40% from its six-month peak. Continued equity dilution and Bitcoin price volatility could erode the economics of the strategy if BTC does not appreciate meaningfully from current levels.

Erik Voorhees Makes Dual Bet: ETH and Tokenized Gold

What happened: ShapeShift founder Erik Voorhees made two notable on-chain moves this week. Lookonchain data shows he purchased approximately 23,393 ETH worth roughly $49 million at an average price near $2,098. Bitcoin Exchange Reserves Hit Lowest Level Since November 2018

The Data:

According to CryptoQuant, combined BTC balances on major exchanges have fallen below 2.708 million BTC as of early March 2026, the lowest level since November 2018. The 30-day net outflow from exchanges totaled roughly 48,200 BTC, meaning investors are moving coins into self-custody and cold storage at a rate not seen in years.

What it might signal:

The combination of declining exchange reserves, extreme fear sentiment recovering from a reading of 10, and MVRV Z-Score in the historically significant 1.2 accumulation zone is a confluence that has preceded meaningful recoveries in prior cycles. This does not guarantee a bottom has been set. But the on-chain fingerprint of March 2026 closely resembles accumulation periods observed in Q1 2023 and Q4 2024, both of which preceded significant price appreciation within 60 to 90 days. The data reflects patient capital, not exuberant capital, and patient capital tends to be correct.

The petrodollar system itself is under stress as Iran selectively routes oil through yuan-denominated transactions, fragmenting global currency settlement flows. Why it could grow:

If the Hormuz standoff persists and oil remains elevated for another 4 to 6 weeks, inflation expectations will rise further. Central banks will face pressure to delay rate cuts. Why it could fade:

That contrast is one important issue that serious investors should not dismiss. The structural ownership picture of 2026 looks nothing like any prior capitulation period, even as the sentiment readings have been historically more extreme than all of them.

The macro environment is genuinely difficult. Oil above $100, a Fed that cannot cut, slowing GDP growth, and a geopolitical conflict with no clear resolution timeline; these are not trivial headwinds. But markets are discounting mechanisms, and the price action of the past two weeks suggests that the marginal buyer of Bitcoin today is not buying it because they expect a rate cut. They are buying it because they are losing confidence in the systems that rate decisions are meant to sustain.

2. Crossover Markets, the institutional-focused crypto trading company, has raised a formidable $31M in Series B funding, valuing the company at $200M. The company primarily focuses on institutional liquidity and will use the fund to expand its flagship platform, CROSSx, an execution-only crypto electronic communication network (ECN). The funding round was led by Tradeweb Markets, in participation with DRW Venture Capital, Illuminate Financial, Ripple, Virtu Financial, Wintermute Ventures, and XTX Markets.

3. Cyclops, a stablecoin payments infrastructure company, has secured $8M strategic funding. The company will utilize the fresh capital to build a payment platform that enables easy crypto and stablecoin settlements for clients without developing proprietary blockchain systems. Castle Island Ventures, F-Prime, and Shift4 Payments led the round.

4. Utexo, a blockchain infrastructure startup enabling instant USDT settlements directly over Bitcoin, Lightning Network, and RGB protocol, has secured $7.5M in a seed round. The funding will support the development of a resilient Bitcoin infrastructure for stablecoin settlements. Tether, Big Brain Holdings, and Portal Ventures led the round.

5. Akave, the decentralized enterprise-grade cloud storage platform, has recently raised $6.65M in a seed funding round. Built on the Avalanche layer-1 blockchain, the platform will use the funds to advance operations and development initiatives. To assess whether this price rejection reflects a genuine deterioration in demand, we turn to the 30-day Simple Moving Average (30D-SMA) of Realized Profit, a metric that aggregates the USD-denominated profit locked in by on-chain participants at the moment coins are spent, smoothed to filter short-term noise.

As price stabilized beneath the $70K threshold, this indicator contracted sharply from above $1B per day to approximately $370M per day, a decline of roughly 63%. This compression in monthly-averaged realized profit signals that the cohort of buyers willing to transact at a premium has materially thinned, with buy-side liquidity now at its weakest since the August–September 2024 period.Taken together, the evidence suggests that upside momentum has stalled, leaving the price in a state of directionless consolidation until fresh demand catalysts emerge.

Here are all the crypto fundraises we heard about this week, ranked by size…

1. STS Digital, the institutional-focused crypto trading firm, has raised $30M in a strategic round. The Bermuda-based DeFi platform supports over 400 cryptocurrencies and will utilize the fund to expand operations across its institutional trading platform, led byCMT Digital, Payward, Strobe Ventures, Arrington Capital, F-Prime, and BitRock Capital.

2. JPYC Inc., the company that launched Japan’s first legally-recognised yen stablecoin, has recently raised approximately 12M (1.78 billion yen) in a series B funding round. Earlier, JPYC partnered with payment infrastructure provider Densan Systems. The fresh capital will accelerate the adoption of $JPYC across domestic and travel payments and cross-border remittances. The round was led by Japanese IT solutions provider Asteria, BitFlyer Holdings, and other participants.

3. t54 Labs, a San Francisco-based AI startup that uses blockchain infrastructure, has raised $5M in a seed round. The primary purpose is to build a “trust layer” for the agentic economy to allow secure and verified autonomous agents execute financial transactions on behalf of businesses and humans. The seed round was led by Anagram, PL Capital, and Franklin Templeton in strategic participation with Ripple, Virtuals Ventures, Blockchain Coinvestors, and ABCDE.

4. Bluprynt, a digital asset company, has successfully raised $4.25M in a seed round. Founded by Dr. Christopher J. Brummer, Blueprint aims to streamline compliance for crypto assets. The funding will bring off-chain compliance processes on-chain through enterprise-grade infrastructure. The round was led by Valor Capital Group and other industry leaders, including Robinhood, Coinbase Ventures, etc.

5. TBD, a Solana-based decentralized prediction market, has raised $3M in a seed round to scale its operations globally, develop a bot-resistant system that relies on verified real human opinion. The round was led by CMT Digital and ParaFi, in partnership with Jump Crypto.

1. 📜 Morgan Stanley Seeks OCC Charter for Crypto Custody: The global financial services company has filed an application with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) on February 18 for a de novo trust bank charter, called the “Morgan Stanley Digital Trust, National Association.” If approved, the new regulated crypto-native custodian will directly compete with industry-leading institutional crypto custodians like BitGo and Fidelity Digital Assets. The new full-service crypto platform plans to offer custody, trading, swaps, transfer, and fiduciary staking services under one roof.

2. 👴 Indiana Puts Bitcoin in its Public Retirement Plans: The Indiana state legislature has approved public retirement funds and savings to access digital assets and spot crypto ETFs in February. Governor Mike Braun is anticipated to sign HB1042 into law within the next few days.

3. 🥶 Tether Freezes $4.2 Billion Over USDT Crime Links: The world’s largest stablecoin company has reportedly frozen over $4.2 billion in USDT linked to crypto-related crimes. Earlier this week, Tether said it has assisted the U.S. Department of Justice in freezing around $61 million in USDT connected to “pig-butchering,” a type of crypto investment fraud, bringing its cumulative total of frozen assets to over $4.2 billion.

4. 🎯 AllUnity Launches Swiss Franc Stablecoin, CHFAU: Frankfurt-based and BaFin-regulated e-money stablecoin platform AllUnity has launched its first fully MiCAR-compliant and 100% reserved stablecoin, CHFAU. The e-money token is 1:1 pegged with Swiss Franc reserves and aims to deliver institutional-grade transparency and regulatory oversight.

5. 🤖 OKX and Chainalysis Roll Out Alterya, an AI-Powered Fraud Prevention Platform: The big players announced a major partnership to integrate Chainalysis’s AI-powered fraud detection platform, Altreya. The new AI-driven threat intelligence will instantly identify and block scam patterns before funds are transferred from the exchange.

Here are the most important and interesting stats in crypto this week...

1. One of the most telling signals in digital asset products right now isn’t the outflows, it’s the apathy and disengagement.

We’ve now reached $4b in total outflows over five consecutive weeks of selling pressure, yet ETP weekly trading volume has collapsed to just $17B, the lowest level since July 2025. Notably, this comes just two weeks after volumes hit a record $63B.

Outflows can reverse quickly, but a volume collapse means no one is showing up. That’s a much stronger signal.

Selling pressure is no longer the dominant force. Investors aren’t simply rotating, they’re stepping aside. Liquidity, attention, and risk appetite are contracting simultaneously.

This backdrop helps explain why capital continues to gravitate toward RWAs, yield, collateral, and cash-like instruments, while speculative flows quietly dry up.

2. The worst Bitcoin pain is likely behind us.

We are close to a bottom but probably not there yet.

Case for more downside:

- Bottoms take time and drift is possible.

- Equities rolling over could push prices lower

- Sentiment is weak with no clear catalysts

- Quantum computing fears continue to weigh on the market.

3. The interesting data isn’t that Hyperliquid led fees yesterday. They almost always do.

The signal is that outside the top 10 networks (3 of which are perp-specific), there is almost no meaningful daily economic activity in this down market.

Networks like Arbitrum, Sui, Monad, TON, and StarkNet generated less than $40k combined in daily fees.

Activity is concentrating now more than ever.

4. $SOL

Imaginary lines held to the Dollar.

$68 will look MENTAL in 12 months.

Even IF we go lower, most will still not pull the trigger.

5. Slowly, but surely, after such a peak, the volatility starts to go down on Gold.

That’s great.

That’s going to turn the lights slowly towards #Bitcoin as an opportunity.

I don’t think we’ll start to see big new highs for Gold. Maybe a sweep, but this is it for this year.

Implied volatility has reacted to downside moves but failed to expand meaningfully, suggesting options markets are stabilizing rather than pricing systemic stress.

Dealer gamma positioning and skew dynamics point to fragile liquidity conditions, with price increasingly sensitive to incremental order flow in a lower-volatility regime.

On-Chain Insights

Time Becomes the Risk

Since rebounding from the $60k region in early February, Bitcoin has entered a sideways consolidation phase. As outlined in Week 06 – Structural Weakness, this fragile range reflects a temporary equilibrium between seller exhaustion and localized support from long-term holders who accumulated within the same price band during H1 2024.

From a broader cyclical perspective, the 7-day moving average drawdown from the ATH currently sits at 47.3%, comparable to the early May 2022 range-bound phase that preceded further downside expansion. Historical analogues suggest that, at similar drawdown depths, time typically acts as a headwind rather than a tailwind for bullish continuation. Prolonged compression at these levels increases the probability that leveraged or structurally weak entities face mounting balance sheet stress.

Absent a decisive reclaim of higher price levels (>$70k) in the coming weeks, the risk of renewed contraction remains elevated.

Deep into Bear Market Territory

Extending this assessment of structural pressure, supply-side pain provides an additional lens into bear market depth. Total Supply in Loss measures the volume of coins whose acquisition price exceeds the current spot price, serving as a proxy for how widespread unrealized losses have become.
